Malaysia's high court ruled last week the Herald weekly had the right to use the word "Allah" after a long-running dispute between the government and the newspaper in the Muslim-majority nation. The paper has been using the word as a translation for "God" in its Malay-language section, but the government argued the word should be used only by Muslims. Jamil Khir Johari said the country's national fatwa council had ruled in May 2008 that "Allah" could only be used by Muslims in Malaysia, state news agency Bernama reported late Saturday. "It is important for Muslims here to guard the use of the word and if there is any attempt to insult or misuse the word we must take all legal action as allowed under the federal constitution," he was quoted as saying by Bernama. Premier Najib Razak urged people to remain calm, saying he was concerned about reactions to the court decision. "The issue is very sensitive and touches on the feelings of Muslims, we need to be calm now and let the matter be resolved through the courts," he was quoted as saying by Bernama Sunday. Meanwhile the Herald's website was hacked at the weekend, causing the site to shut down, editor Father Lawrence Andrew told AFP. "Our website was attacked by hackers and was shut down and we suspect it was done by those unhappy with the present situation," he said, while declining to comment on the government's plan to appeal. The court ruled on Thursday the Catholic paper had the "constitutional right" to use the word "Allah", declaring the government's ban on the word "illegal, null and void". Muslim groups have said they plan to protest the ruling. Universiti Teknologi MARA political analyst Shahruddin Badaruddin said the main issue among Muslims was the fear that the use of the word by non-Muslims would inflame religious tensions. "It is all about the fear that allowing use of the word will make it easier for Christians to convert the local population," he told AFP. Former premier Mahathir Mohamad said the use of the term had to be governed strictly but that Muslims would still be angry over the ruling, according to the New Straits Times. The Herald is printed in four languages, with a circulation of 14,000 a week in a country with about 850,000 Catholics. The court case was one of a string of religious disputes that have erupted in recent years, straining relations between Muslim Malays and minority ethnic Chinese and Indians who fear the country is being "Islamised". http://www.arablaws.org/article/article/Malaysian_govt_to_appeal_Allah_ruling_minister.htm 5th Jan,2010 Wall Street rallies on recovery bets as 2010 starts By Edward Krudy NEW YORK - Stocks climbed broadly on Monday after a report showed the manufacturing sector expanded for a fifth straight month, lifting confidence in the global economy as investors eye fourth quarter earnings. The rally, which marked the first trading day of 2010, drove both the Dow and the SandP 500 to their highest closes in 15 months, while the Nasdaq ended at a 16-month high. The Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index rose to its highest level since April 2006 in December. The report followed similarly strong readings from the commodity-hungry manufacturing sectors in China and India overnight. That and a weaker U.S. dollar helped push natural resource stocks higher as commodity prices rose. "The ISM number was very, very good, and we think it points to continuing strengthening and overall, bodes relatively well in the near-term for the market," said Karl Mills, president of Jurika, Mills and Keifer, an investment advisory firm in Oakland, California. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 155.91 points, or 1.50 percent, to end at 10,583.96. The Standard and Poor's 500 Index rose 17.89 points, or 1.60 percent, to 1,132.99. The Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 39.27 points, or 1.73 percent, to 2,308.42. STAR TURN FOR OIL AND MATERIALS Energy and materials were the top sectors in the SandP 500 as those stocks got a lift from the prospect of stronger manufacturing, which would increase demand for fuel, electricity, metals and some other commodities. Oil companies' shares got a further boost after Deutsche Bank upgraded the U.S. refining sector and raised the ratings on several refiners, including Valero Energy Corp and Sunoco Inc . Valero jumped 6.8 percent to $17.89, and Sunoco advanced 6 percent to $27.67. The PHLX Oil Service index climbed 3.9 percent. The Institute for Supply Management said its index of national factory activity rose to 55.9 in December, above forecasts for a reading of 54.3. A reading above 50 indicates expansion. Both of China's PMI manufacturing surveys rose in December, with the official reading hitting its highest level in 20 months. That was echoed in India, where the manufacturing index hit a 7-month peak last month. Analysts said the reports gave welcome support as investors head into fourth-quarter earnings season later in January. U.S. stocks rose last month after the U.S. unemployment rate unexpectedly fell in November. U.S. crude oil futures rose 2.2 percent, or $2.15, to settle at $81.51 per barrel after hitting a 2-month high earlier in the session. The U.S. dollar fell 0.5 percent against a basket of currencies . Copper hit a 16-month high. Currency traders were cautious about the greenback before Friday's non-farm payrolls report, which investors are looking to for confirmation of further stabilization in the labor market. HIGH HOPES FOR CHIPMAKERS Robert W. Baird upgraded chipmaker Intel Corp to "outperform" on expectations for a rebound in corporate spending on personal computers. That helped drive the Philadelphia semiconductor index up 1.7 percent. Intel, a Dow component and a bellwether on Nasdaq, climbed 2.4 percent to $20.88. Volume, although modest, appeared to be the best since December 22nd, with most market participants back at work on Monday after a long holiday break. About 1.01 billion shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, below last year's daily average of 2.18 billion. On the Nasdaq, about 1.95 billion shares traded. Advancing stocks outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a ratio of 4 to 1, while on the Nasdaq, nearly 11 stocks rose for every three that fell. Unfortunately there are a lot of bastards out there screwing people over. The only reason they can get away with this is that people don't know better. I'm trying to do my part to change this. Here are some of the things I've seen people do that you should watch out for:    * Link pages that aren't reachable from the site's index. This is probably the most common one I've seen. People will submit links to your exchange and the link to your site is on a page that has no links going to it, which means it is completely useless. There's no way someone could do this on accident, so I would avoid dealing with anyone that is dishonest enough to do that. This is quite common with automated link exchange programs like linkexchanged.com or gotlinks.com. It is now standard practice for me to go to a site's root page and look for their links page that contains my link, and if I can't find it easily I don't accept the exchange.    * NoFollow links - This is a relatively new issue, as search engines are supporting the rel=nofollow flag on hyperlinks. The bad part about this is that it isn't easily noticable without viewing the page source or using special browser plugins. If a link has this parameter added to it search engines act like the link isn't there at all, rendering it useless for site popularity purposes. You should also be on the lookout for sites whose link page link has a nofollow flag on it, so the entire links page won't get indexed. Some people sell links like this on purpose just for traffic, but that is usually disclosed upfront. If you catch anyone giving out link exchanges with nofollow tags, avoid them like the plague. The best way I've found to deal with this is to use a toolbar for firefox called Search Engine Status, which has an option that will highlight any nofollow links.    * Links Pages loading in frames/iframes - This isn't much better than the previous 2 mentioned things, but I've seen it quite a lot lately. Many people will load their links pages in frames from sites/domains with no PageRank. I have seen many links pages actually being loaded from geocities or some other free host, but it is hard to tell if you aren't looking for it. One easy way to tell in IE is to right click the area with the links and hit properties.. You'll be able to see if it is actually loaded from a different location if the address doesn't match that in your address bar of the browser. This isn't necessarily a problem, but in most cases these pages aren't indexed in any search engines, making them useless. Webmasters do this on purpose so they don't have to link to anywhere from their precious site. I hate those people.    * Redirect Links - Some web site packages people use (CMS systems) do this so it isn't necessarily someone trying to scam you, but you will quite often see some kind of out.php?id=4095 for your link rather than your site's url. These scripts redirect visitors to your site, but you don't get any search engine benefits from it. Unless you expect this link to get a lot of clicks, I would suggest avoiding going out of your way to trade links with these sites!I believe anyone that uses these techniques is trying to rip you off and they don't deserve your cooperation or business. These back links are the ones, they believe, will be awarded to them after searching, courting and convincing webmasters of other websites.Link building is not composed of this tactic alone. There is such a thing as link baiting, where the quality of your content will be enough to invite the attention of other webmasters and have them dying to include your works in their own websites. And as such, they’d have no choice but to link to your content, winning for your favor the back links that you need. What Is Link Baiting?Link baiting is not a difficult concept to understand. However, it can be a difficult method to implement. The idea is to set up content pages that have articles which possess the following traits:1. The articles are highly informative;2. The articles are well written;3. The articles are engaging; and4. The articles as well as the information they seek to convey are unique, and they cannot be found anywhere else in the World Wide WebIn a way, as many people have come to accept, link baiting is a manner of taking other webmasters hostage. You have the content that they need. You know they want it bad. But you won’t give it to them. Hence, they’ll be left with no other recourse but to link to your website. Why Is Link Baiting An Effective Strategy To Use?Ultimately, you’d want to establish an automated system for your online business. Now, manually pursuing link partners is hardly consistent with such a goal for automation. You need something that you can leave behind for a few days, yet it will still continue to rake in the links you need.Link baiting is one such strategy. You will be relying on the strength of your content, and since your content is perpetually housed on your website, it will always be there, ready to be seen by the whole world, and ready to be picked up by any and all webmasters interested with the same.Essential Considerations In A Link Baiting CampaignLink baiting is very much like fishing. Instead of angling for a bass, however, you’d be angling for links. Other webmasters will be the game. Your content will be the lure.As with fishing, the important thing is to find the right spot. Hence, search engine optimization tactics are still required. The best way by which other webmasters will be able to find your website will be through the search engines after all. You have to place your web pages at prominent positions in the search engine results. But wouldn’t this be inconsistent with the goal of link baiting: to gather quality links for a higher page rank?Yes and no. You see, link baiting is a strategy that is not only concerned with getting a high PR. It is likewise a strategy that seeks to preserve a high PR. A high PR can be gained through SEO practices and solid link building techniques, but these are things you won’t want to do forever. Hence, link baiting becomes important so that you can easily win the links you’d otherwise have to bleed for, links which are necessary to preserve your page rank. There are many kinds of content that are proven to be excellent link baits. These are:• Newsworthy pieces that share revolutionary information which other websites do not convey;• Humorous entries that are just begging to be spread;• “How to” articles that are always in demand; and• Attacks against existing paradigms that offer a novel perspective on certain beliefs.Bhavesh Patel is a full-time Software Developer and Internet Marketer. http://www.arablaws.org/article/article/Link_Baiting_--_The_Most_Powerful_Link_Building_Technique_On_The_Internet_Today.htm 31st Dec,2009 Internal Linking Strategy Internal linking is the way you link to other pages within your website. It is the easiest to achieve and maximize first because you have total and complete control of. There is no need to include all of these links on your homepage.Webmasters have been using Html sitemaps to get their content identified by search engines. This type of HTML sitemaps can be interpreted by visitors and search engines.Website owner must build three types of sitemaps:Html Sitemaps: building an HTML sitemap linked to and from your home page is something confidence webmasters have been doing for years and perhaps is the simplest to create. This sitemap is simply a list of pages contained on your site and enables the search engines spiders to easily find your pages, especially the ones that are linked unfathomable in your website that they may have trouble finding otherwise. You can add to every link a description to give visitors more information about your website.XML sitemap: it is an xml file containing a structured list of web pages. The major factors to accomplish your objectives are valuable content, well designed website, properly structured, build sitemaps and place anchor text. http://www.arablaws.org/article/article/Internal_Linking_Strategy.htm 31st Dec,2009 The Importance Of Linking, Link Popularity Plus Tag And Ping The majority of the major search engines use link popularity as an important factor in ranking relevancy. As search engines have become more sophisticated, so too has link popularity. Link popularity simply is the number of links from other websites that point to your website. This strategy has gained immense success due to the crawling nature of most search engines. Spiders crawl from link to link and store pages into their database. Link popularity is generally gained through reciprocal linking. Other websites would usually point to your website only if you have a link to their website from yours.A few years ago, the number of websites linking to your site gauged link popularity; little emphasis was placed on the "content relevancy" of the linking site. In an effort to gain more link popularity, "link farms" began sprouting up across the web. For a nominal fee, a website owner could join link farms and enjoy increased link popularity overnight.Search engines caught onto this tactic and created better tools for detecting legitimate links. Websites that have links from websites with "similar" or "relevant" content score higher, thus earn better placement in search engines. However, Avoid joining "link farms"; some search engines consider them a form of Spam. Many engines will actually penalize sites for maintaining an abundance of links from non-related websites. It is more important than ever to develop a solid "link-popularity" strategy. One excellent, although time consuming, method is to simply write complimentary website requesting a link exchange.Link analysis is somewhat different than measuring link popularity. While link popularity is generally used to measure the number of pages that link to a particular site, link analysis will go beyond this and analyze the popularity of the pages that link to your pages. In a way link analysis is a chain analysis system that accords weighting to every page that links to the target site, with weights determined by the popularity of those pages. Search engines use link analysis in their page-ranking algorithm. Search engines also try to determine the context of those links, in other words, how closely those links relate to the search string. For example if the search string was "toys", and if there were links from other sites that either had the word toys within the link or in close proximity of the link, the ranking algorithm determines that this a higher priority link and ranks the page, that this is linked to, higher. The higher the page rank of the site linking back to yours the better. The so called "authority sites", which may just be glorified link directories but have page rank of a PR6 or higher will rocket you to the top of search engine listings quickly. So how do you do this? Well the way to do it up until recently was by blogging and pinging, but now the new generation is using what is being referred to as "Tag and Ping", referring to tags, such as Technorati tags placed in the blog and then pinged to authoritative social bookmarking sites.tag and ping at http://www.theinternetmarketingsecrets.com/index.php/2127/the-importance-of-linking-link-popularity-plus-tag-and-ping  http://www.arablaws.org/article/article/The_Importance_Of_Linking_Link_Popularity_Plus_Tag_And_Ping.htm 31st Dec,2009 SEO Search Engine Optimization Link Building Guide What is Link Building?Link Building is simply the process of establishing and distributing your website's URL via the web. This is a critical step to the Search Engine Optimization realm as search engines often rely heavily on external links pointing to your website. In fact this is so important that without any links pointing to yours, you'll more than likely to be NEVER found by Google or Yahoo-yikes! This doesn't mean you should go to any site and just start spamming it with your website's URL -- the search engine's algorithms are far too advanced for primitive techniques like those. However, when done honestly, this can promote your website above and beyond your competition as Google vests a lot of its confidence in external linking from relevant websites. How do I get my URL on other websites, legitimately?Publishing your website on just any website is a very bad idea as well. You want to make sure that you look over the website itself and see if it's relevant to the content on your own website. For instance if you place your website's URL that contains information about gardening on a site that's dedicated to automobiles, that's a bad idea. This tells Google NOTHING about your website and may actually penalize you in their search results. Look for websites not only relevant to yours, but also ones that are respected by the search engines. Avoid all sites that are cluttered with advertisements or affiliate links -- Google may penalize you for having your links here as well. Stay away from ad farms (pages consisting soley of external advertisement links) as this will further harm you in the rankings. Look for legitimate websites and the way to tell is really just using common sense. If it looks good to you, an honest and content rich website relevant to the content on yours, ask the webmaster if you could place your link on their site. It never hurts to ask .Don't do overnight linkingOvernight linking is when you prop up your website and then just go out and post your website any and everywhere you possibly can. Spread your link distribution out a bit so you don't have 100 links in a day and for 5 days you have no future external links. Google sees this as abuse and spam and will penalize your website. Trust me, it's all be done before and Google is just too smart nowadays for black hat SEO techniques. Rather, spread your links out so that instead of getting your website 100 external links in a day, aim for doing this in a month. Gradual linking is better in Google's eyes and if Google is happy, that means Yahoo, AOL, Ask Jeeves, and MSN are happy.Google's PRAlso another way to tell about how generally respected a website is you can use Google's Page Rank tool that's included in the Google toolbar. The PR rates websites on a scale from 0-10. Most websites are only in the 1-4 range, but be happy if yours is 5 or above. This shouldn't be your only basis for rating websites, but it is a good rule of thumb. Don't just go after PR 6 or 7 sites, mix it up a bit. Place a few links here and there on 3 or 4 PR and then go for the big shots.Note: Many websites have no PR and this is quite common. Some reasons could be due to the fact that it's a new website or is on a dynamic page (page using PHP, ASP, CGI, etc.).Vary your anchor textYour anchor text is the text that appears with your website's URL embedded in it. The most common example is "Click here". Now while this is distributing your website, it's not telling Google ANYTHING about what it is. Even if you post it on a website about flowers and your website is about gardening, try and get that anchor text to say something like "Gardening tips" or something more specific. Also try to work your keywords into your anchor text. If one of your keyword phrases is 'Gardening tips' place that in the anchor text. In addition don't place "Gardening tips" for your anchor text on EVERY website. Vary it by placing anchor text like "Gardening FAQ" or "Resource for Gardeners" -- if you have all your external links saying "Gardening Tips" this will raise a red flag with Google and may see it as artificial link building rather than 'organic' (pardon the pun) link building. Artificial link building is black hat and Google does not tolerate it. Your website WILL drop in the rankings if you do this...IMPORTANT: This is a VERY common mistake. Many people will do what I said in the above paragraph completely right, but will only have the anchor text contain their keyword phrases. This is a bad idea as well. If your keyword phrase is "Gardening Tips" it's okay to have few links with that anchor text BUT not too many. Instead have the text say "Tips for your Garden" and vary your keywords and phrases. Google loves this and it looks less like you're trying to do it soley for internet marketing sake.Article submissionThis is a GREAT way to promote your website - by publishing content on a blog or article submission site. You not only (usually) have the ability to add a link back to you, but it also makes that page relevant to your website! So be explorative and helpful. Go to a website and give your gardening tips and then link back to your website. You not only contribute to the world wide web, but you get exposure as well. Just make sure the content you submit is valid and isn't copied from another source unless you have permission to do so. Keep in mind that you should also vary your articles so you don't just copy and paste the same thing for numerous article submissions on various websites.Avoid link exhanging and reciprocal linkingThese SEO technqiues were used years back and were effective - now it's not so much that case. Link exhanging is when you swap links with another webmaster so you place their link on your website and vice versa. This is hardly effective and if done in excess, Google won't think very highly of your website and may see it as spamming, further penalizing your website.Submit to trusted directoriesSubmitting your website to directories such as DMOZ or Yahoo! will give you a monster boost in Google's eyes. At the time this article was written, Yahoo! cost $299 per website listed in the directory and may not be within your budget, that's fine. DMOZ is a free directory and is in fact the largest human-managed directory on the web with millions of websites listed. Unlike crawler based search engines like MSN, Google, or Yahoo, directories are manually submitted content and are reviewed. If your site is deserving of a listing, you're listed. I'd stay away from many directories, however. DMOZ is the best one you can get into, but is a long process (takes anywhere from 2 weeks to months) and you might not even be listed so keep that in mind.Have permanent linksMake sure the links you post are permanent. Temporary links command less respect, so seniority rules on this one!Closing statementWhen it comes down to it, just be honest. Don't try to outwit the search engines' algorithms. You may discover a flaw in the system but you should not utilize it if you find it cunning or sneaky. Just stick to white hat techniques for search engine optimization and you'd be amazed how honesty is the best policy. In addition, search engines tend to be quite forgiving (just don't do bad stuff to where you get banned and removed from the search engine, that would be bad!). Finally, just to sum some stuff up, this article about covers what you need to know for effective link building. If done right, this art can radically transform your placement among the major seach engines.Vance Christensen is a professional search engine optimization specialist who owns and operates SEO Cookie, an SEO online firm. Everyday thousand of new webmasters jump head first into their first search engine optimization project after reading a few SEO forum posts or news articles.Unfortunately these new webmasters have only a partial view of the search engine optimization process and link building that will actually produce lasting results on the top three search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN. The key I would like to emphasize here is achieving and maintaining “lasting results”. If your want your website to do well on the search engines even 5 years from now, it’s imperative you play by the rules and gain as much understanding about safe and effective link popularity building as possible.Considering the sophisticated ranking algorithms used by especially Google, it’s very easy for inexperienced web masters to do irreparable damage to their sites by using spammy on-page optimization and link popularity building techniques that Google frowns upon. The real problem is, most of these search engine fooling tricks or sometimes referred to as “black hat SEO” techniques are not even known to new website owners.Straight answers on link building methods that can hurt your ranking In this article I would like to shed light on some of the link popularity building techniques that will produce very limited results or worse will get your website banned on Google. Before we start, I would like to introduce you to some basic concept about link popularity. A link in its simplest terms is a connection from one website to another. You can read more about web links on World Wide Web Consortium website. Search engines use the number and relevance of links to a website to measure its popularity. Therefore it naturally follows, the websites with the most links and the most relevance of those links will come out on top of the search results. Well, as I will reveal below, there is a whole lot more to links than you can imagine. The risks of link building mistakes Since the link popularity building methods below have varying degrees of negative effects on your search engine ranking from no effect to an outright ban by the search engines, I will place a “Danger Score” next to each of these techniques to better illustrate the risks associated with each method.A “Danger Score” of 10 will most likely result in a search engine ban while a “Danger Score” of zero will have little or no negative effect. Please also keep in mind Google, Yahoo and MSN have different levels of link spam tolerance. Google clearly leads the way in weeding out link spam and is much more vigilant in defending its search results against sites using link popularity building methods listed below.Lets start by listing some of link popularity techniques that will not get you brownie points on the search engines. The weakest links in link popularity building are:   1. Website links in forum posts signatures used to be a favorite method a few years ago to gain link popularity in a short amount of time. Although contributing to community forums is a great way to get your site noticed by other forum members, it’s not an effective link popularity building method anymore if you try to rely solely on a website link in your forum post signatures. (Danger Score:0)   2. Blog comment spam involves posting comments to blogs with a hyperlink pointing back to a website using a well targeted anchor text. This link posting method usually automated with the use of scripting languages and bots. This is a very popular method used by many sites peddling porn, pharmacy and many other products. Don’t get discouraged posting blog comments if you have something worthwhile to say, you can only get yourself in trouble if you over do it by adding a large number of links or try to automate comment posting. (Danger Score:7)   3. Guestbook posting spam is very similar to blog comment spam. The guestbook posts are sometimes automated and if there are a large number of these links identified by search engines pointing to your website, it can results in a ranking loss or a ban. (Danger Score:7)   4. Large number of inbound links from no Page Rank or low Page Rank pages can send a sign of low website quality or link manipulation to Google. Although the Google Page Rank is not as important as it used to be, nonetheless it serves as an acid test for minimum site quality. It’s becoming harder and harder to find new websites with a high Page Rank score as Google updates its Page Rank less frequently. (Danger Score:2)   5. Large number of links from the same C class IP block indicates the website is most likely involved in inbound link spamming. Since class C IP addresses use the first three octets to identify a network, the search engines substantially reduce the link popularity score being passed from one website to another in the same network. A large number of inbound links from the same class C IP addresses also suggest the use of the same hosting company or web server. (Danger Score:8)   6. Large number of links from unrelated sites suggest a link manipulation scheme since the website may lack unique content to attract links naturally. This type of scenario can often be observed in new websites involved in indiscriminate link exchanges using link exchange networks whether it’s automated or manual. It’s inevitable you will have some low quality unrelated links pointing to your website, but if the majority of inbound links are unrelated, you can quickly find yourself in a lot of trouble. (Danger Score:7)   7. Link farms and web rings are setup with the sole purpose to manipulate link popularity by using a central database, automated scripting and a network of websites. This method is usually beyond the reach of the average webmasters as it takes technological savvy and a large number of servers and other resources to execute. (Danger Score:10)   8. Interlinking your own websites is a similar linking scheme to getting links from the same C class IP block, but in this case the WHOIS website registration information may be also used by the search engines to link the owner to all the websites involved in the link network. (Danger Score:8)   9. Co-op Ad networks such as the Digital Point CO-Op Ad Network are used to automatically interconnect websites involved in the network by inserting a small piece of code on their web pages. Every website participating in the network has to be validated first before joining the ad co-op. Google recently took a much harder line against sites using these type of link networks and the risks of getting banned has increased. (Danger Score:9)  10. Paid links is a very controversial subject in the SEO industry, since Google itself is making most of its revenue from selling small text ads next to its search results and other web services. As long as the paid links remain “under the radar” of the search engines the link popularity boost can be very significant to a website. Google is using both human power and automated tools to detect paid text links. When a website it identified as a known seller of text links, the link popularity benefits are no longer passed on to the target website, while the website owner continues to pay sometimes astronomical monthly fees for the text links. (Danger Score:2)  11. Automated link exchanges using server side scripting and databases are still popping up as the lure of easy and fast link popularity building attracts thousands of new website owners. As the saying goes “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is”. In most cases automated scripts are used to execute the link exchanges and they usually leave a very large “foot print”. The search engines can easily identify the websites involved, and punish them accordingly. The automated link exchange services using server side scripts are sure way to loose your search engine ranking or get your site de-indexed by the search engines. (Danger Score:8)  12. Identical anchor text used in a large percentage of inbound links are unnatural and can be picked out by the search engines very easily. When linking occurs naturally people use all kinds of different anchor text to link to a website. When the same anchor text is used in a large number of inbound links, it’s a sign of someone trying to manipulate the inbound links and the search results. (Danger Score:5)  13. Run of site links are placed in the footer or side navigation of a website that is repeated on every page using a server side include or other HTML scripting method. Run of site links can also suggest the use of paid text links to the search engines. (Danger Score:4)  14. 3 way link exchanges occur when a website is invited to participate in a link exchange, but the inbound link is placed on a third website participating in the link exchange. Despite what many people think, three-way link exchanges can be easily identified by search engines and if there are a large number of these types of links are present, it can result in a ranking drop or ban. (Danger Score:3)  15. Low quality directory links could give a decent ranking boost to a website a few years ago, but that is no longer the case. Inbound links from brand new, template based general directories are not going to result in a link popularity increase for your website. These new directories are a waste of time and money to submit to. If you want to submit to well established, older directories, please visit our internet directory list page. (Danger Score:2)  16. Inbound links from sites which are heavily optimized without contact information, phone number or a physical address imply a website that was created with the sole purpose of getting higher ranking in the search results and/or pass link popularity score to other websites. Most of these websites don’t have any real products or services to offer, they are sometimes also used by SEO companies selling permanent text links for a fee or used to place their own clients’ website links on them. If you can’t find contact information on the web site, only a web form, it’s most likely a low quality resource. (Danger Score:1)  17. Inbound links from new sites under 1 year old will not pass as much link popularity score as older domains. The fact is Google favors old websites in its search results especially for very competitive keyword terms. (Danger Score:1)  18. Inbound links from affiliate or Google Adsense sites are relatively poor links due to the fact these sites contain very little unique content. Most of these site solely exist to generate ad revenue from Google’s Adsense program, or affiliate relationships.(Danger Score:2)  19. Inbound links using Javascript or other redirect methods are sometimes used by unscrupulous webmasters creating a perception of a fair link exchange with new webmasters. The problems is, most search engines can only follow static links to your website and therefore any type of redirect to your website will not result in link popularity vote that can be recognized by the search engines.(Danger Score:0)  20. Adding too many links too fast is a sure way to get noticed by the search engines for the wrong reasons. Except in some special cases when a website gains a lot of public exposure and links due to a TV ad, website blog or other forms of advertising medium. Inbound links appearing too fast especially from unrelated websites can result in a ranking drop or complete ban. Slow and steady, natural link building is the name of the game. (Danger Score:5)In Conclusion Search engines are much more sophisticated than people give them credit for. Avoid damaging your web site’s link reputation on the search engines by staying clear of the above link popularity building methods. Their visitors should be able to see your link and click on it. If it is hidden away on some arbitrary page somewhere in the middle of the land that time forgot, you are wasting your time. Chat to the webmaster you link to and make sure your link is prominently displayed. The second reason we swap links (slightly less important according to me), is to grow your site’s link popularity.Link popularity is quite simply ‘how popular your site is’. Search engines take note of how many links you have coming to your site and assume that the more links you have, the more popular and ‘important’ your site is. But beware! Our Search engines (bless their little white cotton socks) are getting really smart and you should be careful as to who you link to (outbound links) and where you get links from (known as incoming links). If you have inbound links from sites with a low PR (Page Rank - that is the Google rating for your site) it could actually effect your ranking in the search engines negatively. In other words you will drop further down the list in searches. Ouch!If you would like a handy tool to check the PR of any page, you can get a handy toolbar directly from Google. I strongly recommend that you get something to be able to check the PR of potential linking partners.Another aspect that affects your search engine position is linking to ‘bad’ sites. By ‘bad’ sites I am referring to sites that have no value or content and simply act as a type of banner or link farm. These sites have a low or absolutely no Google PR and they will only bring you down. Stay well clear. What should the site PR be then? Well, any site with a PR of three or higher should have a reasonably positive effect on your site, but we can’t really generalize.Always ask the webmaster whom you are planning to link to, exactly where your link will be placed. Check out the PR of that particular page and if where you plan to place his/her link is similar or his/her PR is higher it could be a good swap.As with everything in life there are always exceptions, but something that always holds true is the types of sites you link to.Only link to sites that are similar or complimentary to your site. If, for example, I sell shoes on my site, I will never link to a site that sells i.e. insurance. Not only doesn’t it make any sense, but even worse it will affect your ranking! Yup those search engines weren’t spawned yesterday! So what would be considered good sites to link to?They keyword here is synergy. A friend recently launched a rating site (http://www.hotmaybenot.com) and he asked me to help him with this issue. After we spent about half an hour together we soon realised that the list was almost endless. The first thing we did, was to take his top 20 keywords and do searches on those words. The results as you can imagine were just about endless. We then had a look at the concept of the site and soon came across many verticals, like dating, flowers, poems etc. etc. etc. It was actually a whole lot easier than he ever imagined. He is now ready to approach hundreds of these sites with a link swap offer. To conclude I would like to urge every ‘newbie’ webmaster thinking of increasing their sites’ presence to think just a little bit before they go out and gather random, non-sequential links. Haste and ignorance can really be to your detriment.Remember. Be careful out there!  http://www.arablaws.org/article/article/Think_Before_You_Link.htm 31st Dec,2009 Building Backlinks for Google PageRank Success Looking from this angle, it would seem backlinks and PageRank complement one another. In other words, the more the backlinks a webpage has, greater will be its PageRank. Available evidence however does not always support this.Google's rise as a search engine giant and its known emphasis on PageRank led people to build up mammoth quantity of backlinks to webpages. Link farms specializing in 'creating' backlinks in thousands crowded the scene and managed to make fast bucks in no time. To be true, many websites did flourish by exchanging or buying backlinks. But axe was soon to fall. Today, after several rounds of Google's purging, the concept of reciprocal linking or mutual backlinks has firmly taken a backseat. So, how the picture looks like? Are backlinks passĂŠ? If not, what could you do to increase backlinks to your website so that ultimately your PageRank improves?Quality of BacklinksIn an interesting study [http://www.prweaver.com/blog/2004/11/15/49-relationship-pagerank-number-of-backlinks] on relationship between PageRank and number of backlinks, Olivier Duffez has this to say:"... a page can have PR5 with a single backlink whereas another one can have 3,000 backlinks and PR5 too."What this means is that a few backlinks from high PageRank sites are worth many times more than hundreds of backlinks from low PageRank sites.Nature of BacklinksAdmittedly, securing backlinks from high PageRank sites is easier said than done. Unless there is some intrinsic value and / or focused convergence of content, there is no reason why high PageRank sites will feel compelled to provide backlinks.Nonetheless, backlinks from same (or even a notch lower) PR sites, dealing in similar topics as yours, are always a great boon for PageRank.Focus on KeywordsAs far as possible, ensure that anchor texts of backlinks exactly relate to the topics of pages linked to. In addition, if anchor texts of backlinks are also your keyword phrases, it is all the more better. To give an example, suppose 'fishing in queens harbor' is your keyword phrase and you have a content page titled 'Fishing In Queens Harbor - Pleasure Untold'. Ensure now that the backlinks that point to this content page have your keyword phrase as anchor text - something like below:"If you are game to weekend adventures, do not forget to try < a href="yourpage.htm" title="Fishing in queens harbor">fishing in queens harbor".Such specific backlinks notify search engines that your webpage is indeed important for the topic, thus helping in obtaining higher PageRank for that webpage.Article SubmissionsThis has become a rage among potential PageRank seekers. If you subscribe to newsgroups, you will be flooded with new articles everyday. There is no harm in joining this crowd. In fact this is one area where you can play around with your backlinks. If you are writing articles, ensure that they are informative, have a distinct style and above all, are able to capture imagination. The truth is if your articles have no takers, there will be no backlinks. On the flip side, article submissions are a great way not only to get many backlinks (and therefore higher PageRank), but also to boost your profile as a prolific writer. There are thousands of article submission sites out there. Notable among them are GoArticles, IdeaMarketers, iSnare, PromotionWorld, EzineArticles, etc.Other TechniquesBlogs and forums are good places to earn backlinks. Unfortunately, they are being increasingly used for link-spamming. So much so that it will not be uncommon to find that a blog administrator's only job is to delete spurious comments that contribute no value.Yet, blogs and forums are meant for larger public participation in order to encourage and nourish ideas and discussions. If you are serious about quality backlinks, do participate constructively in related blogs and forums. Once again, they help to grow your stature among fellow participants. And they also help to get top-quality backlinks.Article by Josh at http://www.hostingfrenzy.comVisit his site for a comprehensive web hosting directory, articles, tools, and much more.  http://www.arablaws.org/article/article/Building_Backlinks_for_Google_PageRank_Success.htm 31st Dec,2009 Bad Practices with Reciprocal Links Some S.E.O.'s will tell you that reciprocal linking is beneficial. Others will say that reciprocal linking has outlived its course. If you choose to trade links, here are a few things to consider:The point of obtaining back-links is to help your search engine rank. Every link to your site is like a vote for your site. If it's a one way link, from them to you, even better! The quality of the back-link is also important. If a high ranked site like Microsoft were to link to your site, it would be considered a very important "vote," and would surely outweigh back-links from many other sites. But what if your back-link isn't real? There are website owners and directories out there who are willing and eager to trade links with you. But beware, because what they're really trying to do is create a one way link; from your site to theirs! The way they pull this off is by camouflaging your link, rendering it invisible to search engines. Search engines ignore JavaScript, so writing a short script for your link is common. Another method is using Google's new invention: The rel="nofollow" attribute. Google and many other search engines have partnered with Blogging sites to combat comment spam (the practice of dumping your link in a blog to try to improve your page rank). Links posted in most blogs contain the "nofollow" attribute, directing the search engines to ignore it. Well, website owners are catching on, and it's possible that your reciprocal link contains the same attribute.A third way of hiding your link from search engines is by using a "re-direct" script. Instead of your link's URL taking you directly to your site, your link's address is actually another file located within the same site. Once the browser reaches this page, it then reads a re-direct script and finally takes you to your page. Because your link was never actually a link to your site, and because search engines ignore JavaScript, your URL is never read or recognized by the web crawler, rendering your link useless for Page Rank purposes."But what if the re-directing page is accompanied by a text link with my URL intact," you ask?One of two things could be possible:1) The link legitimate and is helping your Page Rank.2) The re-directing page with your link is included in the site's robots.txt file. A robots.txt file instructs search engine crawlers to avoid certain site directories. It's possible that any page where your link lives is purposely avoided by web crawlers using this method. To see if the directory where your link lives is included in the site's robot.txt file, simply type "http://www.sample-url.com/robots.txt" into your browser's address bar. If you see your link's subfolder or web page listed after the word, "disallow," then your trading partner has pulled a fast one on you."But why would website owners want to do disguise my link?" you ask?Two reasons:1) A one-way link is rated higher than a reciprocal link.2) Trading links with a website that is ranked lower than your own can hurt your page rank, but an inbound link from any site is always positive (as long as the site is not considered a "bad neighborhood").There is software out there that can check for valid links. Get hold of it, and you can check your back-links with ease. Another (and more tedious) way is to manually check the HTML code. Even beginners can do this. Just click your browser's "View Source" option, and select "Find" or "Search." Enter your url, and the search tool will automatically scroll the page for your query. If found, be sure to check if it is a JavaScript link or if the rel="nofollow" attribute is present. If not found, then it's likely your link partner is hiding your link's url with a re-direct script. Be sure to check the site's robots.txt file as well to make sure your link's page is indexed. Hopefully, you'll find your link unscathed, helping to increase your Page Rank.Generating back-links is not easy work. If you've read about S.E.O., you know that they’re essential for search engine position (Google in particular). But if you decide to trade links, make sure you're getting your end of the bargain.About the Author: Jason McElwaine is the owner of P.B. Boston Website Design located at http://www.pinbottle.com. Linking was the new game for webmasters seeking to increase rankings.Like many others earlier in the game I linked all of my sites to each other to spread my traffic around. Not long after I noticed that Google had actually banned and blacklisted some of my ever growing stable of web sites. It appeared that Google banned my sites for no other reason than my sites were on the same server, and noticed that I had been inter linking my own sites together. I wasn’t trying to game them, I just used the power of my own traffic to advertise my own web sites to each other. But obviously Google placed so much importance on “link popularity” and as a factor for determining PageRank, that they felt it was “un-natural” for my sites to have so many links from the same network and as such dropped my domains from their index. My sites were banned and then became “bad neighborhoods”.Yes, when a site is banned Google will penalize other sites that link to the banned site. So as a general rule, make sure to never link to other sites that are NOT indexed by Google. A filter could trigger a red flag and they’d look at your site because it linked to a “bad neighborhood”.How severe the penalty is, we do not know for sure, but as there is no upside to linking to a site that has been banned by Google, why take a chance. As I learned more about the importance of links, I needed to find ways to prevent more sites of mine from getting banned. I had a problem because all my sites were on one big jumbo server and even though they had separate IP addresses (20 of them) they still were all in the same class C IP block. At that point I was determined to find a way to stay in the game and prevent more sites from getting banned, and as with most obstacles to making money, I found solutions and continued on.If Link Popularity and high PageRank was the key to higher rankings, I needed to find a way to play the game yet not break their golden rules. At that point I discovered that the prices of dedicated servers had fallen from the obscene amounts that I had been paying for my one beefy dedicated machine. As a high traffic internet marketer I was spending $3,500. bucks a month just to keep one server that wouldn’t constantly crash because of the massive spikes I’d have in traffic. After all, a #1 ranking for a popular search term like the single word “music” or “money” or “free” could easily bring in 50,000 unique visitors a day. Get a few top tens for huge traffic keywords like those and even the manliest of servers would crash. But what good was having a robust server when I wouldn’t be able to link my own sites with each other???As it turned out I was able to buy a couple of servers for far less than I was paying. This enabled me to spread out my domains so they were not all on the same host. The advantage to this is that I could be less worried about linking my sites together and possibly even more important, I was able to reach out to other webmasters and create custom link exchanges offering them links from sites on several servers. This is a great incentive and helped me get some good quality links improving the link popularity and PageRank of my web sites. If you have more than a handful of sites, I suggest you consider spreading them on different hosts and perhaps even dedicated servers. That way you'll stay one step from the risk of your domains becoming bad neighborhoods!Mike Liebner is a skilled SEO and the author of the popular free Article Marketing News newsletter and includes a free 19 page PDF Special Report with over 60 minutes of video. Unfortunately, having a newly built website creates a number of hurdles you must cross before reciprocal linking becomes an easier process. Learn to spot these roadblocks up front and you will break through the PR 0 barriers. Why do I have a PR of 0?Google Page Rank (PR) is given to websites approximately once every quarter to determine their level of importance on a scale of 1-10. Many factors determine PR, most of which Google keeps very secret. It is during this time when Google has yet to rank your website that you will show a PR of 0 in the Foxfire Google toolbar. Why Does a PR of 0 Matter? One aspect of backlinking to websites that greatly affects your PR is the quality of the pages you are linked to. For instance: linking your car parts website to ten dog grooming websites will not give your PR much of a boost due to lack of relevance, but if you link to several websites that are also automobile related, it will send your PR in the right direction. Many webmasters look at the requesting website’s PR before they will complete a link exchange fearing that a low PR will bring their website page rank down. Though this is not really the case, it is a hurdle you must cross. What to do about it?Unfortunately, the PR of 0 will not change until Google updates their page ranks, but you can push through the next few months by doing the following:1. Run the numbers. There are several tools available to help lessen the burden of manually searching for link partners. I suggest using one of these to help find a large pool to start from. Set a goal to send a determined number of link requests each day. I generally look for 50 matches, sort quickly by web title for relevance and apply to the link exchange forms that match my content. Even if you only get one response a day, you are still building quality reciprocal links.Note: If you see they have a PR restriction, honor it and put them in a category for the future.2. Build relationships. If you know a Webmaster with a site relevant to yours, send a personal note requesting a link exchange. Many website owners are willing to help out if they know the quality of the site.3. Build one-way links by sending out articles, posting in newsgroups or by building a profile on high traffic sites such as MySpace. Commenting in newsgroups or on high traffic sites and adding a comment about your website in your signature file (making sure the link is active) gives you backlinks to your website from those pages.Having an initial PR of 0 is a reality all new webmasters must face, but if you forge ahead, building a high quality link exchange network, you will be pleasantly surprised when Google makes it’s page rank updates. Don’t be discouraged and don’t give up. Soon you will be in a position to easily gain reciprocal links to other websites with content your readers will value. This will give you both a steady stream of targeted traffic from your partner sites, and a high quality, content rich website as well.About The Author:Tracy Weber the successful owner of the eProZone Internet Article Directory http://eprozone.com , has written unbiased reviews of link exchange tools to make the process run more smoothly. http://www.eprozone.com/Article/Link-Exchange-Product-Reviews-/20  http://www.arablaws.org/article/article/Google_s_PR_0_And_Link_Exchange_Difficulties.htm 31st Dec,2009 Webmaster Follies - Ignoring PR0 Directories When manually submitting links to directories webmasters normally ignore directories which don't present any page rank value. This is because the common presumption is websites with PR0 or low PR value are worthless, don't serve a purpose, and can potentially devalue your website. This is considerably true in most cases, mainly when considering purchasing text links on a site, but directories are a bit different. The differences with directories are they are mainly maintained by webmasters, which ultimately mean they will potentially gain PR value in the future. Directories usually go levels deep and the further down the chain the less likely the page you are listed on will ever have any PR, but most PR0 or low value PR sites are either new or less active, which means you can easily reserve a top permanent link placement and reap the rewards later. Additionally, the advantage to submitting to new directories is that it is less likely that your listing will be rejected or overlooked, directories is a numbers game, the more listings the better, if the directory is new the directory owner wants as many listings as possible. Inclusion in PR0 or low PR sites are usually FREE, but you can believe that once it gains momentum and its PR reaches an appealing level, the FREE inclusion would change. The question I ask myself when submitting to PR0 or low PR sites, is does the good outweigh the bad? If I know it is a directory maintained by a webmaster that has other successful sites or directories, then I will definitely submit a link. If the site is SEO friendly and links are organized in first-come-first serve opposed to alphabetically or random, then I would submit a link. If the directory has very few categories, but at least one relates to my site(s) then I would submit a link. If the site I am advertising is a PR0 or low PR site, then I will submit a link, in hopes that the site submitted to would gain PR soon and share the value. And if the site give me a good feeling, then I would submit a link, I call it webmaster intuition. If 60% or more of the sites you submit to which are PR0 or low PR sites eventually gain a good standing page rank value which is shared amongst the pages, then you have done good and will reap the rewards. Gaining PR is not a hard task, all it take is creating good backlinks and I bank on the fact that directory owners know this and are creating backlinks as well. Most directory owners know that to make a directory powerful and most active is by having a good PR value, having a good PR value allows a directory owner to charge more effectively for link placement, knowing this most directory owners are performing SEO tactics to increase their PR. You can almost bet that any directory owner is concerned about their page rank and actively trying to increase it. That makes it even more appealing to submit to directories. http://www.arablaws.org/article/article/Webmaster_Follies_-_Ignoring_PR0_Directories.htm 31st Dec,2009 Seo Link Building For Small Business 1. Reciprocal links! Yes they still hold value as the SE’s are constantly and will continue to change their algorithms.2. Place your links on directories, education sites (google love them), sites not relevant (small percentage), same business relevance sites and “exact same topic sites (as many as possible)3. Vary the pr of sites where your link is placed.4. Make sure you have both one way and reciprocal links, not just one or the other.5. Keep you linking campaigns constant. Add roughly the same amount of links each month to keep the SE’s happy.6. Linking is a slow laborious job unless you have many months/years of experience actually doing it…. therefore always outsource.7. Do not use popular linking services, most are a rip off by a long mile.8. If using sites like elance.com, do not pick the cheapest price! However for it to metamorphose to the extent that content, link building, and link baiting become redundant has not happened yet. This dream of slow growing sites or of those that are worthy of recognition but get swallowed by the big bad wolf (search engines), is yet to come true. According to those in the know this will happen only when the Semantic Web becomes a reality or when a brand new protocol takes the place of present ones.As of now for search engines like Yahoo, Google, and MSN links and unique content are the “keys” to high rankings. In the competitive business of the internet you must make use of all the help you can get. Consider using a publicist who specializes in the net and think about hiring an expert to handle the tiresome and nerve wrecking business of link building. Acknowledged experts are WeBuildPages among many others.Gurus who have years of net experience recommended that you should avoid:1. Submitting dummy content in the hope of building links or using one page that has been successful time and again with few changes.2. Using paid directories the returns are never useful. You will just loose money at an average of USD 15 a hit.3. Using spamming to build links. The worst thing is to ask questions and post answers yourself using varied IDs for your own site.4. Using what are known as “garbage” links.5. Using stolen or copied content.6. Making use of shams like fake mails that tempt people with great amounts of money.Links should be built on strong web presence and excellent meaningful content. Only the “right” path will lead to sustaining success. Try:• Providing easy to comprehend content and make it exciting and interesting. If content is useful word of it will spread like wildfire and links will pour in.• Ensure that the content is well written and has no punctuation or grammar errors. This will ensure that schools, universities, and libraries too will link to your pages.• Establish your status by including a picture, writing briefly about the site and your aims and objectives.• Submit material to ezines and article sites like EzineArticles, GoArticle, and iSnare.• Use syndicated press releases to promote your siteUse fair not foul means to build links or link baiting. Check for orphaned URLs and remove them instantly. What you must do is spring clean, create, update, and delete URLS regularly. Set yourself a schedule of sorts. Employ methods to check dead pages like examining server logs and jotting down all pages that give a 404 file not found error.Find out as much as you can about the art of link building. Search engines, particularly Google, use link popularity to help evaluate and rank your website. Link popularity refers to the number, quality and relevance of inbound links from other websites to yours. Some people waste a lot of time seeking links in the wrong way and from the wrong places. The "10 Commandments of Link Building" will help you avoid such time-wasters and achieve true linking success.1. Thou shalt recognize the value of links. For now, and for the foreseeable future, link building and SEO walk hand-in-hand. Linking profiles are one of Google's top ranking factors, and the "other" engines use them as well. Once upon a time, you could simply write a lot of keyword-rich content and rank well for it. While that may still be the case with MSN / Live Search, it no longer carries you very far with Yahoo or Google. That's where links come in.2. Thou shalt begin link-building on thine own website."What is this heresy? Link-building starts on my website? Who ever heard of such a thing?" All too often, I see website owners throw up a new site and go out hunting for links before they have a site worth linking to. Link building always starts on your own website.Think about it for a moment. Aside from directories and paid listings, few people will link to a bare-bones website that offers nothing unique, helpful or interesting. If you start hunting for links before your website has earned its place on the web, you're going to have a long, hard time of it.On the other hand, if you build the kind of website that makes others in your industry or niche say, "Wow, that's really something! I know some folks who would like that," then your link-building efforts will be a breeze. It all starts with what you put into your website.3. Thou shalt pursue the right kinds of links. Not all links are created equal. Sure, you want a lot of links to your website ... we all do. But you should always put link quality before link quantity. Jim Boykin, SEO expert and owner of WeBuildPages.com, said it well:"It’s not always 'He with the most links' who wins the game ... Really, very often, he with the right 10 links can beat the guy with 1,000 of the wrong links. I see it all the time."What makes for a quality backlink? Generally speaking, the most valuable links for SEO purposes are those that come from older, well-established sites within your topic area.4. Thou shalt alternate link text.To gain visibility for more of your key phrases, and to make your linking profile seem more natural to search engine algorithms, it's a good ideas to mix up your link text. For instance, instead of having a thousand backlinks to my site using the phrase "real estate marketing," I strive to get a broad mix of link text. I shoot for "real estate marketing" and "Realtor marketing" and "real estate SEO" and ... you get the picture.5. Thou shalt find links everywhere.Links are everywhere, and they're what make the web, well … a web. So link opportunities are everywhere, as well. You can gain links by publishing articles online, syndicating press releases, submitting to directories, participating in forums, growing a blog or becoming an authority in your field. You are only limited by your imagination, and imagination is our next commandment.6. Thou shalt be creative.Quick story. I was doing some link building for a home buying website once, and I thought I had exhausted my options. I had submitted press releases online, submitted the site to directories, published articles with the big article directories, and even written a few link request letters (which I normally don't bother with). Then it dawned on me. There were hundreds, possibly thousands of websites out there looking for the kind of content I could provide, but not knowing where to look. So I began searching phrases like "home buying articles" and making a list of websites that provided this content.Next, I emailed these sites one by one and invited them to use any of the 100+ articles I had written on the subject. All I asked was that they keep the author's note with hyperlink. By being proactive with my article publishing, I earned more than 30 new and highly relevant links! When you combine quality content or a unique website with strong imagination, your link opportunities are limitless.7. Thou shalt not waste time with silly link requests. The higher your website ranks, the more link-request emails you are going to receive. It's a law of the Internet. Let me save you some time and energy by saying you can delete 90% of these emails. Why? Because 90% of the time they are from sites looking to "feed" off your good rankings, but offering nothing in exchange.I have one website that's ranked very well for its key phrases. It generates a lot of email requests from brand new sites that aren't even indexed yet, much less ranked well. Is that a fair exchange for me? Hardly. What's worse, most of these sites have nothing to do with my subject area. This is the 90% you shouldn't waste time with.Once in a while, however, you'll receive an email that's actually personalized and specific. It will be intelligent, it will be from a site similar to yours, and it will be worth considering. In other words, it will be part of the 10% club.8. Thou shalt track thine own progress. If you put a lot of energy into your SEO program, you need to be able to track your progress. There are business reasons for this. But more importantly, there are morale reasons for it. You want to feel good about what you're doing, right? You want to see some positive results to justify your hard work, don't you? Of course you do. So keep track of your link-building progress the same way you keep track of your traffic and rankings. There are a number of tools online that can help you identify links from other websites to yours. Yahoo Site Explorer is my favorite. You can use Site Explorer (http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com) to quickly and easily find out which websites are linking to yours. You can also export this information into a spreadsheet for further use. Nice, huh?9. Thou shalt keep the big picture in mind.Yes, links are a big part of your website's visibility. But there's a lot more to SEO than links. In fact, let's look at the bigger picture and say there's a lot more to online success than gaining links. If you tend to get carried away with certain tasks, like I do, then schedule your SEO efforts to avoid focusing only one thing. Set aside some time for link-building, article writing, website improvement, product development, etc.In other words, don't adopt "SEO tunnel vision" to the point you neglect your website's primary offering (whether that be products, services, content, or a combination of the three).10. Thou shalt enjoy aging well. One of the things I live about SEO is that it gets easier as you go. When you put the right fundamentals in place up front, you'll be able to increase and/or maintain your visibility with less effort over time. Most search engines -- and especially Google -- place a lot of emphasis on the age of your domain, your individual web pages, and the links coming into those web pages. Like a good wine, links get better with age.* Copyright 2006, Brandon Cornett. We all know it and we all know that it is the hardest part of search engine marketing. So how do we find those one way, quality links willing to link back to us? We are told specifically by search engines to avoid link farms, and spamming is out of the question, so where do we start? Assuming you don't have the marketing budget of the big boys, this can be tough. Let’s take a look at the most popular ways.RELEVANT LINK EXCHANGES On topic link exchanges can be beneficial to both parties and can help move your site on up the SERPS. Paying attention not to spam your potential partner, why not try and see if they are actively looking for a link exchange? Check their website. See if they have a links page. A good way to do this is to set up your own website directory or a directory specific to your niche. In exchange for your partner linking to you, you can link to them from your directory creating a "Three way link exchange" which done correctly holds more weight.SUBMITTING TO DIRECTORIES Submitting to general and niche directories is a time consuming task, however the search engine marketing rewards can far outweigh the labor. Free web directories are a great way to get free and on topic links and if you can afford a few dollars, you can outsource this work very cheaply. Many directories take a long time (Sometimes months) to process submissions. This is a good thing as your backlinks will build slowly and search engines will not see you as "Link Spamming".ARTICLE SUBMISSION Just like what you are reading now, one of the easiest and most enjoyable methods of search engine marketing is writing and submitting articles to article repositories. Not only are you creating a useful resource for others, you are also creating extremely targeted and on topic content. Most article repositories allow you to include a link back to your site too.POSTING IN FORUMS Many forums allow the use of "Signature" links. Used correctly, and in a forum with your niche, you can gain many on topic backlinks by simply asking and answering questions. Not only do you gain those backlinks, but you also gain credibility in your industry.BLOG COMMENTING Although a dying trend as a result of link spamming, blogs are a nice way to get some backlinks. Many blogs allow you to link back to your website with your comment. Be sure to contribute something to the conversation.SOME WORDS OF CAUTION Link spamming hurts everyone. Be careful to create original and useful content. When writing articles, do not stuff your keywords. When posting on forums, don't post for the sake of a backlinks, similarly with blog comments, be sure to contribute something. It will elevate your reputation and you'll be surprised at the actual traffic you get from them. Search engine marketing is a time consuming task. There is no quick fix. Do it right and you will be rewarded, eventually, with those golden top 10 positions.David Davis, is the lead developer and project manager of Redfly Marketing Search Engine Marketing Ireland. It is the almost natural ability of blogs to rapidly link to one another that has caused these web logs (as they were first called) to quickly rise in prominence to what they are today. As you read this virtually all the growth on the World Wide Web is being driven by blogs. The other key advantage that links and blogs enjoy is that they both last virtually forever once they are up and running on the web. This is a huge advantage and it is important for every webmaster and blog owner to fully understand the full implications of this. For starters it means that once your blog or link is up and running, it will continue to generate traffic for you, slaving away on your behalf for many years to come. What’s more, links and blog posts that contain links hardly require any maintenance once they are up and running. Only those who at one time have had to deal with the endless headaches of offline marketing and referral tools like sales persons or newspaper ads will begin to appreciate the huge plus that links and blogs bring to any online business using them as marketing channels. They will quickly understand the fact that most offline tools usually come with endless complications and a constant need for attention, repeated investment, and endless supervision and maintenance. The facts are that apart from not requiring most of these things, blogs and links will last for many years on the World Wide Web giving a webmaster continuous service and an endless flow of valuable leads and traffic. This in itself makes them big winners. Links have an added advantage over blogs. And that is the fact that they can be purchased which means that you can acquire a large number within a short time. You pay once and keep them forever working for you and your site. Increase Sales to YOUR online business by driving targeted interested visitors to your site who have read your related article. The importance of inbound links to your website will most likely never diminish. It's no secret that search engines, especially Google, value quality inbound links to a website for higher rankings. However, these days the emphasis is not on the quantity of links, instead it is on quality. A couple dozen links to your site from related, high quality, authority sites are much more valuable to a search engine than hundreds of low quality links you obtained by exchanging with anyone that would say yes. Before I tell you how to get quality inbound links to your website, I feel I should mention something you should definitely NOT do to obtain inbound links. Never participate in an automated link exchange program. These programs are useless. They don't benefit you because you will be automatically exchanging with all sorts of low quality and unrelated sites. The search engines may even penalize your site for links obtained this way. Even manual link exchanges do not carry nearly as much weight as they once did. However, manual link exchanges are not totally dead so if you do decide to do some "old fashioned" link exchanges, be sure you don't exchange with sites where your link will be placed on a page with hundreds of other links and make sure the page your link is on is linked from their home page. Again it's important to remember you only want to exchange with quality sites related to yours. Now I will talk about my number one strategy for getting inbound links. And that strategy is... (drum roll please)... To write and submit articles related to your website niche. Be sure to have a resource box at the end of each article. Your resource box should mention a little about your expertise on the subject and have link to your website. If you write good, informative articles then other people will want to repost them on their websites. This will give you an inbound link for the search engines and also a link for human visitors to follow. It's a win/win situation. And for the most part only people who have websites in your niche will repost your articles, so the inbound links you are getting are also relevant. Article marketing is nothing new or revolutionary but it does work and works very well. Now here are some tips for increasing your inbound links by writing and distributing articles...* Be sure to write original articles. If you purchase private label rights to articles, rewrite them to make them unique before submitting.* If you are having a hard time getting started on an article all you have to do is search article directories for other articles on your topic. Find a few that you like and use ideas from them to write a new article in your own words. Remember, you can't just copy another article. That is copyright violation. And it won't be unique anyway so it won't do much for you.* If you are good at writing with a little humor then you might want to use that skill when writing articles. Humor is very powerful and can attract a lot of readers.* Once you have a completely original article written, find a few quality websites in your niche and offer them your article for free with your resource box attached. You are not asking for a link exchange, you are simply giving away your informative article for free to selected sites.* After you have a few good articles on a topic you should compile them into an ebook. Place a short author bio at the end of the ebook with a link to your website and allow other site owners in your niche to give it away free to their visitors. They can give it away as a "thank you" for signing up for their newsletter, as a gift for visiting their site, as a free bonus for purchasing their product or any other way they want to give it away. Once your ebook gets into a few people's hands it will be passed around more and more, thus giving you inbound links and a boost of traffic to your site.* Submit your articles to a few of the top article directories. When doing this you aren't so much doing it for the inbound link from the directory itself. Of course, that link doesn't hurt but the main reason for submitting to these directories is to get your article in front of other website owners who will republish it on their sites. Two of the top directories to submit your articles to are http://ezinearticles.com and http://goarticles.com* Publish links to your articles in digg (http://digg.com) and other community based popularity sites. A well "dugg" article can generate thousands of visitors to your website as well as inbound links.* Network and build good relationships with maybe 10-20 quality site owners in your niche. The higher their site is ranked, the better. Help each other with site promotion, content ideas and article exchanges. Not only will this build relevant and quality inbound links to your website, it will also get you some good friends and JV partners who will prove to be very valuable to your business as time goes on.Overall there are many benefits of writing and submitting articles. You get inbound links which help with your search engine rankings among other things. Articles also help to establish you as an expert in your niche, bring you targeted traffic and provide you with free advertising. A little time spent each day writing and distributing articles can do incredible things for your website and business. http://www.arablaws.org/article/article/How_to_Get_Inbound_Links_to_Your_Website.htm 31st Dec,2009 Link Baiting. The Stairway To Heaven Or The Gateway To Hell? A lot of people are saying that the Web is going to Hell in a hand basket and it’s things like link baiting that’s taking it there. google_protectAndRun("ads_core.google_render_ad", google_handleError, google_render_ad); Link baiting, if you’re not familiar with the term, is the latest SEO trick that involves creating startling or controversial content that is so outrageous that people will naturally create back links to it in their blogs, e-zines and other web-based watering holes. It’s called link BAITING because it’s all about creating a hook that draws back links like rotten fish heads attract crabs. Now there’s nothing wrong with creating hooks, mind you, and link baiting could certainly be classified as a white hat SEO tool if it weren’t for the fact that so many people are abusing the concept. Good hooks include humorous items, new items, articles and content about valuable resources and things like that. But “Matt Cutts Devours Babies?”, that’s something else again. Who is Matt Cutts and why is he eating kids to begin with? Run his name through Google and you’ll come up with this: “Matt Cutts works for the quality group of Google, specializing in search engine optimization issues. He is well known in the SEO community for enforcing the Google Webmaster Guidelines and cracking down on link spam. He certainly doesn’t sound like a cannibal, but when that headline appeared on Threadwatch recently, no doubt posted by someone who wanted to annoy Google’s Chief of Link Baiting Police, the back links started flowing like cheap wine in a hobo camp. And what was the end result? A lot of buzz and pages of links in Google all pointing back and forth to every web site that took the bait and discussed their opinion of link baiting. And Matt? He doesn’t really eat babies. What’s the future of link baiting? It’s going to keep on happening and it’s up to us to self police. If you get taken in by a link baiting headline, don’t give it more publicity by discussing it on your blog or sending it out to your e-zine subscribers. That’s just as bad as forwarding those stupid “Bill Gates will send you $1,000” emails that come from YourFriend@AOL.com. Be different. Be smart. Engage in link baiting but make it white hat and you’ll keep your self respect and your credibility. http://www.arablaws.org/article/article/Link_Baiting_The_Stairway_To_Heaven_Or_The_Gateway_To_Hell.htm 31st Dec,2009 Importance Of Linking Building For SEO The easiest way of improving your ranking in the search engines is to let them know that your site is important. How do you do that? Well, the best way is through the process of link building. Link building is the practice of encouraging other websites to link to your own website. If other websites are linking to your website, your “link popularity” will increase, search engines will deem your website important, and in turn, you should receive more traffic. Link building is a time consuming task, and it is for this reason that most all websites rank so poorly in the search engines. Many website owners are unaware that link popularity can have such an effect on their search engine rankings. This is good new for you. Start building your links now and establish your “web cred”.Importance of Page RankGoogle, the Internet’s most popular search engine, measures a website’s link popularity through the use of Page Rank. To view a website’s Page Rank, just download the Google Toolbar. The toolbar will display the Page Rank of every website you visit, measured as a little green bar. A website’s Page Rank can vary from a low of zero to a high of 10. Don’t worry if your website has a low, or no Page Rank. Many websites only have a Page Rank of 1 or 2, but the Internet’s most popular websites possess a Page Rank of 8 or 9.Quality CountsSearch engines are not just looking for the number of links that point to a website. The most important aspect of the process is obtaining quality links. Quality links are links from website that possess a high Page Rank. Obtaining a link from a website with a high Page Rank is best, although any site with 1 or above is beneficial. Search engines also consider the theme of a website which links to you. It is best to get links from websites that are associated with the industry in which you do business. For example, my trade is website design; therefore, I work to obtain the majority of my links from other web design related websites.Getting LinksOne of the best ways to advance your link popularity is to offer quality and informative content to your visitors and hope for natural links. If they find the information interesting enough, they will naturally link their website to your own.Directory submissions are probably the fastest and easiest way to obtain some inbound links. But, because Internet directories link to thousands of other websites, the value that they can add to your Page Rank gets diluted by all the other links. The one must-submit-to directory is The Open Project Directory (http://www.dmoz.org). After this, it is best to search for smaller niche or local directories. Submitting your website to Canadian, Ontario, and even Windsor web directories will help let the search engines know which region(s) you are servicing. Then, you should submit to industry related directories to indicate to the search engines your line of business. A Google search can help you find these types of directories. If you feel that you have a knack for writing, a good way to generate inbound links to your website is to write articles. These articles can then be submitted to article syndication websites, where other webmasters are free to use your article on their website. But, there’s a catch – they must provide a link back to your website in return for using the article. If you don’t have the time or drive to write an article, but you participate in an industry related discussion forum, you’re in luck. Just remember to include a link to your website in your signature. The last way to generate quality inbound links is through reciprocal linking. This type of strategy involves contacting other webmasters and proposing a link exchange. Find some non-competitive, but related websites and simply e-mail them to see if they are interested. It’s best to already have their link on a page in your website before the proposition.Linking Text Is ImportantWhen employing any of the above linking approaches, it is imperative that you try to use targeted key words as part your link. The search engines read this text to determine what your website is all about. If your website involves “Red Widgets”, try to use this as part of your link text.ConclusionLink popularity is very important when attempting to rank well in the search engines. Link analysis is only going to get more important to search engines, not less. This type of strategy is resistant to manipulation and justifiable way to measure a website’s importance. Therefore, the link building process must be given high priority in your Internet marketing efforts, and since it takes time, the sooner you begin the better. http://www.arablaws.org/article/article/Importance_Of_Linking_Building_For_SEO.htm 31st Dec,2009 Link Building is the most important part of Optimizing a site Procedure of link building(1.) Create a html page, preferably named as "Resources/Links/Partners" and place a link of this page from Index Page of your site. This page should never be more than 1 click away from the index page of your site else webmasters won't be interested in participating in the reciprocal link exchange program.2. Target both "industry-related" and "non-industry-related" websites as your link exchange partners. For example, if you are providing SEO services, then try getting links from "industry-related websites (i.e. websites dealing with SEO, maybe your business rivals). This is important, because if 10 of your rival (here SEO) sites give link to your site, then Google will surely pay importance to your site, because getting links from rival companies are difficult. Your site MUST be of some high caliber else the other 10 sites won't have linked! Also, try procuring general links as well.3. Always exchange links with websites which have high PageRank (PR) (at least 4, the more the better!) (both Index Page as well as Resources/LinksPage of the Link Partner's site should have PRs of >=4)4. Have a link code ready for participating in link exchange program. Here is a sample link code for a SEO company.Search Engine Optimization, Ranking, Placement Services - Offers Search Engine Optimization, Ranking, Placement Services to get top ranks in various Search Engines.Always prefer a text link (as given above) in comparison to a banner link, where your chance of Google spiders, i.e. Googlebot finding the potential keywords is limited only to the "alt tag" of the banner. Also, Google pays importance to the text of the incoming link/anchor text (i.e. the incoming link text must contain high potential, relevant keywords), so develop a link text with title ("search engine optimization ranking placement services") which will help you in Google Ranking.5. Refrain from java script link code because Google spiders find it difficult to index.6. There are various ways of approaching and procuring potential link partners. Firstly, how to get industry related websites to link to yours? Suppose, "search engine optimization", "search engine promotion" and "search engine ranking" are 3 of your core keywords. Go to Google. Type in each of the three keywords, and find the top 10 sites for each keyword. Now, you have 10 * 3 = 30 websites. Visit the links page (if applicable, since some sites refrain from participating in link exchange programs) of each of the 30 sites, and note down all the sites that are linking to these sites. For example, if each of these 30 sites have 10 sites linking to it, you have 10 * 30 = 300 potential websites to exchange links with. (Please note that our experience shows that conversion rate of successful link exchange is 1 in 4-5, i.e. if you approach 4-5 websites, 1 site will ultimately provide you with reciprocal link, so in order to get high incoming links, you must research extensively and find more potential link partners. Also, as mentioned above, always try to exchange links with websites having PR >=4).7. If you request a link to a top-level page or the homepage of your site, this will have a positive effect on this page. If the PageRank of this page increases, then the page below it will increase (if the internal linking structure is correct), but it will still be one PageRank number below the page above it that was linked to.8. Manually submit the page to Google where your link partner has placed the link of your site. For example, if your link partner's website is www.abc.com and he has placed your website in his resources page, namely, www.abc.com/resources.html, then go to http://www.google.com/addurl.html and submit www.abc.com/resources.html. It is very essential for getting good ranks in Google that you submit the page where your site has been placed by your link partners.Importance of Messageboards, General Forums and GuestbooksOf late, you will find that some websites belonging to the "most-highly-competitive" industries (e.g. casino gambling industry, domain registration and web hosting industry) that have achieved top ranks through links from messageboards, general public forums and guestbooks. These techniques are sometimes highly profitable for Google Ranking and hence, it is wise to do some research in Google and find some popular messageboards/forums/guestbooks which are already in Google's Index. Here also the target should always be to get messageboards/forums/guestbooks which have a minimum PR of 4. After finding the potential messageboards/forums/guestbooks, submit your site's information, containing a description and URL in those messageboards/forums/guestbooks.For example, let's say www.messageboard.com is a popular messageboardAfter you have submitted your site's information in www.messageboard.com, it will generate a URL, say, www.messageboard.com/msgboard/1.html where your site has been placed. Here also, you need to submit this newly-generated URL (i.e. www.messageboard.com/msgboard/1.html) which contains information and links to your site to Google (http://www.google.com/addurl.html) for achieving good ranks in Google.Note : Try targeting messageboards of educational (.edu)/governmental (.gov) institutions since they usually have high PRs and receive huge amount of traffic every day.To read more articles click on http://www.searchengine-optimization-guru.com/seo-whitepapers.htmlAuthor BIO : With over 100 clients, SEOguru Technologies, a SEO, SEM and web development agency, delivers measurable returns of your marketing investment through its various solutions.  http://www.arablaws.org/article/article/Role_of_Link_Popularity_in_getting_Top_Google_Rankings.htm 31st Dec,2009
